Shilo Shiv Suleman is an award winning Indian artist. Suleman’s practice lives and breathes at the intersection of Magical Realism, Art, Nature, Culture, Technology, Feminine Energy, and Social Justice. Her work is unapologetically abundant, weaving together the sensual and sacred, past and future- through paintings, wearable sculptures, interactive installations, and public art interventions. Her practice is an extension of the diverse embodiment and sensuality of pre-colonial India- sometimes reclaimed (and sometimes imagined) but deeply rooted in ceremony, ritual, and earth magic.
She is the founder and creative director of the Fearless – a movement in replacing fear with love in public space. Suleman works out of her studio, which is located in the 17th century Hawa Mahal complex in the heart of Jaipur. In 2023, Suleman was the recipient of a 3 million dollar grant from the Waverly Street Foundation to create public art and develop the Fearless Foundation- an institution of political art across borders. As of today, Fearless has created over 40 public monuments in 16 countries, working with communities most invisible or marginalized – including Muslim and Dalit women in India, Indigenous communities in Brazil and North America, communities affected by gang violence in Pakistan, Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and queer communities in Tunisia and Indonesia
Suleman has exhibited her work at the Southbank Centre in London and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam to name a few. In 2024, she became the first ever Indian artist to exhibit at the pyramids of Giza for Art D’Egypte. In 2022, her installation Grove was acquired by Google for their HQ at Palo Alto, California. Sotheby’s New York auctioned her work Temple in their 2021 show ‘Boundless Time’. Suleman was also the recipient of the Burning Man Honorarium grant in 2014 and 2016, respectively. In addition to the Google acquisition, Suleman’s work has also been acquired by prestigious foundations such as the Faizal and Shabana Foundation as well as in personal collections, like that of Indian designer Sandeep Khosla.
